Electrical sockets are ubiquitous in our homes and businesses, and play an essential role in ensuring that our electrical appliances and lightings work properly. Although they often go unnoticed, their importance is undeniable. In this article, find out about the different types of socket outlets, how they work and how to install them for a stylish and functional interior.

The different types of socket outlets
Socket outlets :
Nowadays, the socket-outlet is the most popular and widespread type of electrical outlet, whether in the home or in a commercial setting. Mainly wall-mounted, they provide the power supply for most of our appliances: domestic appliances, electronic equipment, lighting, etc.

Socket outlets with USB ports:
With more and more devices using a USB source to recharge, the range of products on offer is diversifying, and USB sockets are increasingly making their appearance in residential and tertiary environments (hotels, offices, coworking spaces, etc.). Wall sockets incorporating USB-A or USB-C ports offer an accessible, modern solution for charging smartphones and other electrical devices at any time.

Socket with RJ45 ports :
Sockets with RJ45 ports are indispensable in connected homes, offices and industrial installations, where a fast, reliable network connection is crucial. RJ45 ports are designed to connect Ethernet cables, enabling high-speed connections for the internet and internal networks (LANs). What’s more, the RJ45 sockets are standardised with 8P8C connectors for universal compatibility.
Connected and intelligent sockets:
Connected sockets are the new high-tech trend in electrical sockets. Remotely controllable via smartphones or voice assistants, they not only save energy, but also allow you to efficiently manage your lighting in the living room and bedrooms, as well as your electrical appliances in the kitchen.

Installing an electrical socket: surface-mounted or flush-mounted
When installing electrical sockets, it’s important to choose finishes that blend in with your decoration while meeting the specific needs of each project..
Surface-mounted or « ready-to-fit » installation :

Surface-mounted or ‘ready-to-install’ sockets are all-in-one solutions. Quick and easy to install, they’re a wise choice for people who don’t want to have their sockets built into the wall. Available in timeless colours, shapes and materials, they guarantee a neat, uniform appearance. With their surface-mounted electrical connection, surface-mounted sockets are mainly found in older buildings, temporary installations (renovations) or to add a retro touch to a room.
Flush-mounted or composable installation :

Recessed or composable sockets offer a modern, made-to-measure solution. Integrated into walls and partitions, they are commonly used in new residential and professional premises.
The mechanism, the front panel (also known as the plate) and the cover… each element of the socket is infinitely intercambiables. With its diversity of styles and finishes, the flush-mounted socket offers a wide range of choices to match your other electrical accessories, such as switches. What’s more, its modularity facilitates repairs and upgrades if necessary. But what are the origins of the electrical socket?
The first electrical sockets appeared at the end of the 19th century, shortly after Thomas Edison’s invention of the light bulb. TT Smith was the first to introduce the wall socket in England in 1883. Initially very simple, these devices quickly evolved to meet the growing demand for electricity in homes and industries.
In the 1920s, the first standards for electrical sockets were established, enabling greater compatibility and safety. Since then, many different types of socket outlet have been developed to suit different electrical needs and configurations around the world.
