How a two-way switch works

The two-way switch, also known as a permutation switch, is a single or double device, essential in electrical installation, especially in new construction. The two-way switch is very popular because it allows remote control of lighting from two different locations. In a residential or commercial environment, it is ideal for large rooms such as living rooms or corridors.

From a technical point of view, the two-way switch operates by means of a rocking mechanism, generally from top to bottom. To ensure smooth operation, the two-way switch uses shuttle wires. The shuttle wires are the conductors that connect the switches together, enabling the electrical signal to be transmitted from one to the other. When one of the switches is actuated, it changes the position of the circuit, turning the light on or off independently of the state of the other switch.

Installing a two-way switch

It’s worth remembering that a two-way switch can be used for single or double ignition. Installing a double switch is a little more complex, but can be done by following clear instructions.

To install a two-way switch, we recommend you call in an electrician.

Once the wires are correctly connected and plugged in, install and screw the mechanism into the flush-mounting box. This box is generally universal, with rare exceptions. Finally, clip the front panel of your choice onto the mechanism, and your functional, designer switch is ready for daily use in your home.

Advantages of a two-way switch

Ecological

With two-way switches installed in every corner of your home, you can easily control your lighting, preventing it from being left on unnecessarily and saving energy in the process.

Practical

The two-way switch lets you move freely around your home, avoiding the need to go back and forth, while offering practical, efficient control of the various lights.

Safety

In staircases, entrances or corridors, which are narrow and generally dark areas, it’s safer to install a two-way switch to have total control over the light. This reduces the risk of falls or accidents.

Modular aesthetics

To blend harmoniously into all your interiors, whether retro or contemporary, specialist companies such as Fontini, Fuente Barcelona, Modelec and Vimar offer many styles and finishes of designer switches. Without further ado, discover our selection of two-way switches on our website.
