One watt is equal to one joule per second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This unit measures the electrical power produced by the light source, that is, its electrical consumption. With low-energy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nedgis.com\/en\/accessories\/category--bulb\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#166983\" class=\"has-inline-color\">bulbs <\/mark><\/a>such as LEDs and compact fluorescent bulbs, this unit no longer indicates the lighting efficiency of a bulb but rather its energy consumption: the higher the wattage, the more electricity the bulb uses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until 2006, we chose the strength of our lighting by looking at the number of watts listed on a bulb. The more powerful the light, the more energy it consumed, and the higher its wattage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, however, new types of bulbs can produce <strong>much more light while consuming significantly less energy<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They are called \u201ccompact fluorescents\u201d because they produce light by exciting a fluorescent molecule.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fluorescent light consumes much less energy than traditional incandescent lamps, which produce light by heating a metal filament.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Compact fluorescents also generate much less heat. However, we do not recommend compact fluorescent bulbs as they are difficult to recycle and highly polluting after use.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Energy consumption is therefore no longer a sufficient criterion for measuring a bulb&rsquo;s strength.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>energy label<\/strong>, rated from A to G, defines the energy efficiency of a lamp. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nedgis.com\/en\/q\/where--your-kitchen\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#166983\" class=\"has-inline-color\">a kitchen <\/mark><\/a>or bathroom, for example, the lighting needs are much greater than in a living room or bedroom, and each space has its own rules and requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To light a part of your home effectively while creating a pleasant living space, it\u2019s essential to learn a few lighting concepts. The <strong>lux<\/strong> is a unit of measurement for luminous flux and characterizes the amount of light received per unit of surface area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good lighting highlights areas you want to emphasize or bring attention to, such as living spaces where people gather and are naturally drawn to when entering a room: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nedgis.com\/en\/q\/where--your-dining-room\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#166983\" class=\"has-inline-color\">dining room table<\/mark>,<\/a> coffee table in the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nedgis.com\/en\/q\/where--your-living-room\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#166983\" class=\"has-inline-color\"> living room,<\/mark><\/a> couch, kitchen island, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The choice of lighting depends on four criteria: the type of room to be lit, the desired ambiance, the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.nedgis.com\/es\/2025\/02\/27\/how-can-you-better-understand-and-choose-the-kelvins-of-your-lighting\/\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#166983\" class=\"has-inline-color\">appropriate color temperature of light,<\/mark><\/a> and the lighting distribution to make the most of each space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lighting strength adapts to activities and rooms:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tasks like homework or meal prep require bright lighting, while activities like reading or watching TV call for softer, diffused lighting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nedgis.com\/en\/q\/where--your-office\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#166983\" class=\"has-inline-color\">office<\/mark><\/a><\/strong>, it\u2019s essential to have strong lighting to avoid eye strain while working. Aim for at least 300 lux, or between 3,000 and 6,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.nedgis.com\/es\/2025\/02\/27\/how-can-you-better-understand-and-choose-the-lumens-of-your-lighting\/\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#166983\" class=\"has-inline-color\">l\u00famenes<\/mark><\/a>, for sufficient comfort. The main criterion for bedrooms is the light color (measured in <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.nedgis.com\/es\/2025\/02\/27\/how-can-you-better-understand-and-choose-the-kelvins-of-your-lighting\/\">kelvins<\/a>), which should be warm white to promote sleep.
